Best SIM Card for Bangladesh + eSIM vs Local SIM [2026 Guide]

Getting connected in Bangladesh is one of the first things you’ll want to sort out after you arrive.  While there’s WiFi in all the hotels that you’ll want to stay in, being connected when you’re out and about will allow you to use ride-hailing apps (essential), keep in contact wwhith trusted sources and guides (another essential in Bangladesh), and use mapping apps.  In many countries, we rely on esims, and we do indeed have one that works in Bangladesh, but for this country eSims that you buy from a third-party provider are NOT the best way of staying connected, primarily from a cost perspective.  Here’s my guide to the best SIM card for Bangladesh and comparisons with eSims too.

The good news is that SIM cards in Bangladesh are cheap and easy to get, and coverage in cities is generally good. But there are a few decisions to make—should you buy a local SIM, use an eSIM, or just rely on WiFi? In this guide, I’ll break down the best SIM cards for Bangladesh, how to get one, and whether an eSIM is actually worth it for your trip.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS

At a Glance (Quick Summary Box)

  • Best overall SIM: Grameenphone
  • eSIM: Convenient but more expensive
  • Where to buy: Airport or city stores – the airport is easier and better
  • Best approach: Local SIM for longer stays, eSIM for convenience

Do You Need a SIM Card in Bangladesh?

Yes. Without a doubt, having mobile data in Bangladesh makes a big difference.

You’ll need it for:

  • Booking rides (Uber, Pathao)
  • Maps and navigation
  • Contacting hotels or drivers
  • General travel planning

There is WiFi at all the hotels you’ll want to stay at, but knowing where you are on a Bangladesh train, or hailing an Uber or Pathao (the ride-hailing apps used here), means that mobile data is essential.  Even if you just want to know what you *should* be paying for a ride, well then you need that data. My guide on where to stay in Dhaka is here.

Mobile Networks in Bangladesh (Overview)

There are three main mobile networks in Bangladesh suitable for visitors

  • Grameenphone – best coverage and reliability
  • Robi – good balance of cost and coverage
  • Banglalink – cheaper plans, decent in cities

Grameenphone is, without a doubt, the best option for most travelers to Bangladesh. It has great deals, super coverage both in and outside the cities, and you can buy it right there at the airport.  There’s more on arriving at Dhaka International Airport in my guide here.

We always travel with a global eSIM, so that we have connectivity wherever we are, and it’s usually a great deal, in many countries its cheap enough to just use that eSIM (it’s this one), but for Bangladesh you are MUCH better off getting a SIM when you arrive at Dhaka Airport – they do physical SIMs and eSIMs there.

Best SIM Cards for Bangladesh

Each of the providers has a physical SIM and an eSIM option; it depends on which you prefer, or which works in your cell phone.  Pricing appeared to be the same whether you wanted a physical SIM card or an eSIM.

Grameenphone

This is the most reliable network in Bangladesh, with the best coverage across the country. Slightly more expensive, but worth it if you want fewer issues, according to locals we spoke to.  Regardless of their thoughts on cost, it didn’t feel expensive. You CAN hotspot from a tourist SIM card in Bangladesh bought from Grameenphone.

Robi

A solid alternative to Grameenphone with good pricing and decent coverage. Robi works well in cities and most tourist areas.

Banglalink

Banglalink is usually the cheapest SIM card option in Bangladesh, especially for data packages, but coverage is particularly poor in Sylhet and Sreemangal, so it’s best suited for the main city and urban travel.

The Best SIM Card for Travel

This esim from Surfroam is the best and most convenient option for a SIM Card for Sweden.  You can be online as soon as you land (or arrive on the ferry) and there’s no need to swap physical sims in and out. It’s a worldwide SIM – no packs, just credit. That never expires.

Physical SIM also available – check here.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Bangladesh

When I say SIM card, in this instance, I mean both SIM and eSIM, and we’ll start with the easiest.

Online before you arrive

The easiest, but not the cheapest, way to get a SIM card for Bangladesh is online before you arrive, and for this, I recommend Surfroam.  This SIM from Surfroam is the best and most convenient option for a SIM Card for world travel. You can be online as soon as you land, and there’s no need to swap physical SIMs in and out. It’s a worldwide SIM – no packs, just credit. That never expires.  I wrote about how it works here.

However, in this instance, I recommend you use the Surfroam SIM or eSIM as a backup and get yourself a SIM card or eSIM while you are in Bangladesh, as it is much cheaper.

Buy a SIM for Bangladesh at Dhaka Airport

You’ll find SIM card counters at Dhaka Airport arrivals. This is the easiest option and gets you connected immediately.  Each of the main providers has boots that are in the arrivals hall (just after you leave customs).

Card or Cash? Read my guide to currency and payments in Bangladesh here.

  • Grameenphone Booth: Directly opposite the exit to customs and baggage claim, usually open 24/7. You can pay with cash or a card.  We used a card, and it went through straight away.  The SIM card was activated immediately.  We paid 799 BDT for 25 GB of data and 300 local minutes
  • Robi/Airtel Booth: Directly opposite the exit of the arrival hall, but only usually open from 07:00 – 23:00
  • Banglalink: Not present at the main international arrivals that we could see.

These SIM and eSIM providers won’t help you connect at the Visa on Arrival counter (read my guide to Visa on Arrival in Bangladesh here), you can use a global eSIM – like Surfroam there, if you need to send emails of your accommodation and return flight details, but be aware that the signal coverage at the VOA desk is very, very poor.  The airport does, however, have free WiFi, and I’ve covered that in the VOA guide here.

Buy a SIM for Bangladesh in the city shops.

Each of the main providers has stores – you can find them on Google Maps.  There is one in Gulshan, for instance, around a block from the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  If you don’t buy a SIM or eSIM at the airport, then ask at your hotel where the closest store is to buy one.  Google Maps isn’t always accurate.

How Much Does a SIM Card Cost in Bangladesh?

SIM cards are inexpensive in Bangladesh.

  • Basic SIM: low cost
  • Data packages: very affordable compared to most countries
  • Prices vary depending on provider and data allowance, but overall, it’s a very budget-friendly setup.

Here are the deals that Grameenphone has at the airport

What You Need to Buy a SIM Card in Bangladesh

To buy a SIM card in Bangladesh (and we were offered a SIM or eSIM), you’ll usually need:

  • Your passport
  • A passport photo (sometimes taken on the spot)
  • Basic registration details

However, we did NOT need a passport photo; they just took a copy of one of our passports, completed basic registration details, and we were done.  The process is quick; it took 7 minutes.

Buy online ahead of time: eSIM vs Local SIM – Which Should You Choose?

An eSIM can be best for short trips, and they’re ideal if you want convenience and a great backup.  I recommend Surfroam for this.

Local SIMs or eSIMs bought from Bangladeshi providers are better and cheaper for longer stays; you’ll get more reliable coverage for a better price.

Practical Tips for Staying Connected in Bangladesh

  • Get a SIM at the airport for convenience
  • Keep your passport handy
  • Choose a reliable network – Grameenphone is generally the best
  • Download maps and apps in advance
  • Have a backup option (eSIM or offline maps)

Final Words on SIM Cards in Bangladesh

Getting connected in Bangladesh is easy, affordable, and well worth doing as soon as you arrive.  You’ll save a whole lot of time yomping around Dhaka trying to find stores.  As a backup, a global eSIM or SIM is a great idea, but it’s way more cost-effective to pick up a SIM or eSIM from a local provider when you arrive.  However, whether you choose a local SIM or an eSIM, having mobile data will make your trip significantly smoother and help you navigate the country more easily.
