How to Get to Ala Archa National Park

Ala Archa National Park is the closest mountain wilderness to Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek, and it’s an easy one to underestimate. Glaciers, granite peaks over 4,000 meters (13,120 feet), and river gorges that are a world away from the city. They’re all reachable on a half- or full-day trip with zero multi-day trekking required. You don’t need a permit, a guide, or a week of planning to get a proper taste of Kyrgyzstan’s mountains here; you can even get a local bus here. All you need is just a morning, a bit of patience with the transport options below, and reasonable legs, although there are short hiking options too. Why Visit Ala Archa National Park

Bishkek doesn’t lack for parks, but nothing else near the city gets you this close to real non-manicured wilderness this fast. Ala Archa gets you to the foot of glaciers and 4,000-meter-plus peaks less than an hour from the capital. You can hike a gentle river trail if that’s all you fancy, or head further toward the Ak-Sai Glacier and the Ratsek Hut if you want the mountains to feel properly earned. Either way, it’s the single best value day out from Bishkek if mountains are what you came to Kyrgyzstan for in the first place.

How to Get to Ala Archa National Park

Getting to Ala Archa is straightforward. There are three practical ways to do it (ignoring self-driving): a public bus, a Yandex taxi, or a guided tour that deals with all the logistics. Bus to Ala Archa National Park

You want Bus Number 1 from Bishkek. And it’s a proper bus, not a shared marshrutka minibus. They depart from central Bishkek near Ala-Too Square. It’s the Abdumomunova transport stop. And here’s a link to it on various maps

It runs from around 08:00 until about 19:00, roughly every 30 minutes, and costs 50 KGS each way. Card only as of July 1^st 2026; drivers are not allowed to accept cash. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won’t. You could always pay your cash to another rider and have them pay for you if your card won’t work.

The ride takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on Bishkek traffic, which, as everywhere else in the city, is predictably awful.

This is the route that the bus takes.

This bus takes you to the parking lot of the National Park. After this point, only electric vehicles are allowed in the park. (So if you’re self-driving and have an electric vehicle, then you can go further). A free (electric) shuttle bus will take you further into the park.

Taxi and Yandex to Ala Archa National Park

A Yandex taxi from central Bishkek to Ala Archa costs around 1,000 KGS each way, which is a good option if you’re short on time or traveling as a group where the cost splits down nicely. You can even save a little more money by using Yandex carpool.

Guided Tours to Ala Archa National Park

If you’d rather not deal with any of the above, the Trekking Union of Kyrgyzstan runs organized trips to get here, and there are a couple of good bookable options too. This half-day tour with cable car and panoramic views takes care of transport and includes the park’s new cable car for views over the gorge, while this half-day tour with a guided hike is the better pick if you’d rather actually get out on the trails than just look at them from above.

Entrance Tickets for Ala Archa National Park

Once you’re at the parking lot/entrance, you need to buy your ticket to get into the park. They cost 200 KGS for adults (regardless of nationality), and you’ll need a card to pay. If you’re on a tour, then your guide pays for you.

While you’re in the park now, you’re still 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) from the base of the cable car, hiking and what you’ve actually come to see. But the park provides free onward transport.

Parking Lot / Entrance Onward Transport at Ala Archa

A free electric shuttle bus takes you to the main trailheads, about a 10-minute ride, so you don’t need to walk it. Return buses run until around 19:00 to 20:00, though double-check the last departure with the driver of your bus. The buses run every 15 minutes or so.

The free shuttle bus will drop you near the base of the cable car and the trailheads. Note that if you take the cable car, there are no hiking trails at the top, just a view. So if you want to hike, you’ll have to come back down. The cable car also does NOT run on Tuesday.

What is Ala Archa National Park?

Ala Archa was established as a national park in 1976 and covers around 165 square kilometers (16,485 hectares) of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, just south of Bishkek. It’s home to more than 20 glaciers, including the Ak-Sai Glacier, and its highest point, Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak, reaches 4,895 meters (16,060 feet). The park’s name translates roughly to “colorful juniper,” in homage to the juniper forest that lines the gorge on the way in.
