Bangladesh Visa on Arrival

If you’re planning a trip to Bangladesh, one of the first things you’ll need to figure out is your visa. For many travelers, the easiest option is a visa on arrival, which you can get when you land at Dhaka Airport. It sounds simple, and it can be, but there are a few things you need to know before you rely on it.  Visa on arrival in any country carries a slight worry that you won’t get it, but there are a few easy steps you can take before you arrive – and when you get here, to make your Bangladesh visa on arrival process run a whole lot more smoothly.  So read on for my guide to the visa on arrival process at Dhaka International Airport.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how the Bangladesh visa on arrival works, who can get it, what documents you need, and what to expect at Dhaka’s international airport (Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). I’ll also cover when it’s better to arrange your visa in advance, so you can avoid delays or surprises when you arrive.  The Bangladesh visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and is a single-entry visa.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS

Do You Need a Visa for Bangladesh?

Most travelers will need a visa to enter Bangladesh. There are very few visa-free nationalities, so unless you already know you’re exempt, you should assume that you’ll need one.

For most visitors, there are two main options:

  • Get a visa on arrival at Dhaka Airport
  • Arrange a visa in advance through a Bangladeshi embassy or consulate

Which one you choose depends on your nationality, how long you’re staying, and how much hassle you want to deal with on arrival.

Who Can Get a Visa on Arrival in Bangladesh?

Visa on arrival is available to many nationalities, including travelers from:

  • The UK
  • EU countries
  • The USA
  • Canada
  • Australia

You can check here with the Bangladesh Government to see if you are eligible for a visa on arrival.

However, eligibility isn’t guaranteed purely based on nationality. In practice, immigration officers may also consider:

  • The purpose of your visit (tourism is usually fine)
  • Your onward or return travel
  • Your accommodation details

For most standard tourist visits, a visa on arrival works without issue, but it’s always worth checking the latest rules before you travel.  The best place to check this is with the Bangladesh embassy for your respective country.

Here’s the site for Germany, the USA, and the UK.

Who Should Get a Visa in Advance Instead?

Even if you’re eligible for visa on arrival, there are situations where getting a visa in advance is the better option:

  • You want to avoid delays at the airport (but, of course, there are ALWAYS lines even when you have a visa)
  • You’re arriving during busy periods, like holidays
  • You’re not 100% sure you meet the requirements
  • You prefer having everything sorted before you travel

If you’re arriving late at night or just want a smoother experience, arranging your visa beforehand can save time and stress.

Visa on Arrival Bangladesh – How it Works

To get a visa on arrival in Bangladesh, you’ll need certain pieces of information and documentation with you. These include:

  • Passport validity – at least 6 months remaining
  • Return or onward ticket – proof you’re leaving the country
  • Hotel booking or address – where you’ll be staying – I recomend the Omni Residency in Banani.
  • Cash or Card for the visa fee.
  • Purpose of visit – tourism is the most straightforward
  • A pen to complete the form – this is really important, as there are no pens at the desk!

You may not always be asked for every document. We were asked for all of the above, and also about our occupation, as were all the folks in the lines ahead of us.

The process is as follows

  1. Pay for your Visa on arrival at the Bank.
  2. Complete the immigration form (you will find them on the counter to the right of the bank)
  3. Take your visa receipt, completed immigration form, and all your paperwork to the VOA counter and answer their questions.

Visa on Arrival Cost & Payment

The cost of a visa on arrival in Bangladesh is US$50, or the equivalent in 16 other currencies.  It’s all the main currencies.   Payment can be made in any one of 17 currencies, and also by card – Visa, Mastercard, American Express are all accepted.  There is NO ATM in this part of the airport, but there is a bank for currency exchange.  Read my guide about arriving at Dhaka International Airport here to find out about ATMs, money, SIM cards and transport options here.

Where to Get the Visa on Arrival at Dhaka Airport

After landing, you’ll enter the immigration hall.  Whether you arrive on the same level or have to come down the escalator or stairs, the layout is as follows.

Visa on Arrival Desk

On your immediate right is the visa on arrival area.  As you look to the right, you’ll see a branch of the Sonali Bank, where you pay for your visa.  There are two windows to this office area, but there was only one of them staffed when we were there.

To the right of the bank is a long counter for the Bangladesh Police Special Branch, which processes the visas on arrival.  There is space for 5 officers to work there.  There were four working when we arrived at the beginning of the line at 13:00.

Ahead of you is a seating area and a desk to obtain free WiFi.  If you turn WiFi on your phone, you’ll see various free WiFi options, but you will need the password for all of them.  Simply hand your phone over to the person at the free WiFi desk, and they will put it in for you.

If you’re out of power, there is also a bank of sockets there that you can use. Read my guide to plugs and power sockets in Bangladesh here.

You CANNOT get a SIM card in this part of the airport, but I’ve covered where you can in my guide here.

Step-by-Step Process for Visa on Arrival

It might seem obvious, but there are some key things that you can do to make this process go more smoothly.  The first

Pay for your visa first.

You should get in line to pay for your visa first.  Lining up, queuing, it’s not like it is at home.  It’s more of a suggestion than an actual line.

You can pay for your Bangladesh visa on arrival in cash (17 main currencies, including Euros, GBP, Chinese Yuan, US dollars) or on a card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express are all accepted).  If you are traveling as a couple or a family, you can pay in a single transaction with a card.  You will get a card receipt and also TWO stamped and signed receipts (each one-third of a piece of A4 paper).

For more on money and payments in Bangladesh read my guide here.

Now line up for the VOA counter

Again, the lines are suggestions.

Complete the Bangladesh Immigration Form

While you are in either the visa payment line or the VOA line, complete the immigration form.  You need to include:

  • Name
  • Sex
  • Date of Birth
  • Nationality
  • Passport Number
  • Passport Expiry Date
  • Flight Number
  • Flight Date
  • Purpose of Visit  (Tourism usually)
  • Address in Bangladesh (use your hotel in Dhaka)
Bangladesh Immigration Form

Provide the Evidence required by the Immigration Officer

Showing evidence of your outbound flight or onward travel and your accommodation on your phone is NOT ENOUGH.

You need to either give them a printout of both or send them an email with the booking details of both your onward travel and accommodation.  (Note: just the address that you put on the immigration form). There’s more on where to stay in Dhaka in my guide here.

If you have NOT printed this information, you can email it to them.  They will provide the email address at the immigration counter.   BUT if you are relying on mobile data, there is virtually ZERO signal at the immigration counter, so it’s best if you are NOT printing your onward transport and accommodation details to use the free WiFi at the airport.

The free WiFi desk is in the same area as the VOA counter, and if you’re facing the counter, it is behind you.

Visa on Arrival Approval

When you have satisfied the immigration office, then they will stamp your passport, write (in your passport) the date of arrival and the date of expiry, give you your copy of the payment receipt, and tell you to “avoid all the lines at immigration and just walk straight through”.

And that’s exactly what you do.  Depart the VOA area, walk around the corner, and on the LEFT HAND side of all the immigration counters, simply walk to the front, under the “visa on arrival” sign, and head out towards baggage reclaim.  There is NO NEED TO LINE UP for anything; there is nothing further to be stamped or dealt with.

And now you’re free to head on into the city, and for that you’ll need my guide on going from Dhaka Airport to the city.

Tips for Getting Your Visa on Arrival EASILY and Smoothly

Want this to go more easily and smoothly than it could?  Here’s what you should do BEFORE you get to the VOA counter in Dhaka International Airport (DAC)

  • Have all documents ready before landing, and have printed copies of your accommodation and onward travel with you
  • Bring cash (equivalent of US$50) or a foreign transaction fee-free card (like Wise)
  • Fill out forms carefully.  Don’t forget to sign it
  • Stay patient, there WILL be a line at both the bank and the immigration counter.  And the line won’t be organized.  And EVERYTHING takes time.  Usually, more time than you expect.
  • If there is a line and you are traveling in a group, split up to get WiFi enabled on your devices, especially if you don’t have your documents printed.

FAQs about the Bangladeshi Visa on Arrival Process

Here are all the answers to the questions you didn’t realize that you had on the VOA for Bangladesh.

Is a Visa on Arrival Guaranteed?

No.  The Bangladesh visa on arrival is not guaranteed. The final decision is always made by the immigration officer.  That said, if you meet the requirements and are traveling for tourism, it’s usually straightforward.

What is the Bangladesh VOA Visa Length & Extensions

A visa on arrival is issued for 30 days.  They are not usually extended, but if they are, you will need to visit the Department of Immigration and Passports in Shere-E-Bangla Nagar, West Agargaon, Dhaka City. Staying longer in the city? Read my Dhaka Travel Guide.

How long does it take to get a VOA in Bangladesh?

The whole process can take anywhere from 20 minutes (quiet periods) to 1–2 hours (busy periods).  It largely depends on how many flights arrive at the same time.  We began the line at 13:00 and were finished by 13:38.

Final Words on the Bangladesh Visa on Arrival Process

Arriving in a new country is stressful enough as it is, and the current world situation doesn’t make it any easier.  For citizens of a huge number of countries, the VOA in Bangladesh is both practical and reliable.  Make sure you arrive with printed documentation and cash or a fee-free foreign transaction card, and it will go a whole lot more smoothly.
