Fabulous post Sarah! All good to know; especially the train information. We plan to see China eventually so booking trains months out is the way to go I see. Makes sense with so many folks wanting to use a world class system. Thanks for sharing!

Many VPNs are not working in China. The ones that are well known are always at risk beeing blocked. For a purpose of visiting China IMHO the safest way would be to go with a small under the radar provider like SurfShark VPN to name one.

Just a couple things from my own experiences there! I used the water from the sink to brush my teeth sometimes and had no issues, so in my opinion, if you are desperate you should be okay (my experience in Xi'an and Beijing). Also, my experience with people taking pictures was generally awful. My friends and I would often say no and they would continue to do it. It got to the point of ridiculous (this was in Xi'an, way less of a problem in Beijing). They wouldn't get rude with us for not taking pictures but they would just continue to do it. We all thought that was incredibly disrespectful. Other than those couple things I completely agree with everything you said!!
