In reply to <a href="https://asocialnomad.com/kyrgyzstan/bishkek-to-almaty/#comment-195156">Charlotte</a>.

What a fabulous trip it sounds as though you’re having! Yes, we went lots more places, but I just didn’t get around to writing it up yet, we’re still on the road. What I recommend: 1) Free walking tour Almaty (with Aiguerim, she’s fabulous - https://www.guruwalk.com/walks/59318-almaty-all-the-highlights-of-the-city-centre-4-and-3-h-options ) 2) don’t miss the metro stations, just buy a ticket and see them all for dirt cheap . 3) Charyn Canyon, Kolsay and Kaindy Lakes – you can fit it all into one (brutally) long day, but it helps with a time crunch and but we had great fun on it https://www.getyourguide.com/almaty-city-l1414/almaty-charyn-canyon-kolsay-and-kaindy-lakes-day-trip-t565634/?partner_id=7KYIG0N&utm_medium=online_publisher 4) Big Almaty Lake and the “Original Apple” orchard, beautiful lake and while the apple orchard isn’t much to see, its still nice to go to.
I wrote most of our Kazakhstan travels on Facebook - this should find all the details. https://www.facebook.com/profile/751866949/search/?q=kazak We also went up to Astana, Shymkent and Turkestan

Hi Sarah, what did you do once you reached Almaty? I mean in terms of travel? Did you stay a few nights? Visit any other areas of Kazakhstan? We are ending a tour in Bishkek and have about a week before starting another tour of Armenia and Georgia and thought maybe we'd pop into Kazakhstan. Thank you so much for the bus info/details, very helpful!

This was SUPER helpful, especially with the pictures, thank you! We had taken the bus from Almaty to Bishkek and even with some information beforehand, it got pretty hairy. Our bus left us at the Kyrgyz border after we took too long going through border control…

Hello Ruth, I would contact the museum at Pegasus Briddge. +33 (0)2.31.78.19.44 info@memorial-pegasus.org and ask their advice on this. They are probably not the right people, but they will know who can help. Their team there speaks excellent English if you decided to call them rather than email. I've love to know how you get on. Sarah

I accompanied a group of American & French -10 y.o. 4th graders (part of a back-to-back program between Dearborn, Mi.& St. Cloud, Fr.) on a day trip to the Beaches of Normandy in early May of 1981. When we stopped in the town near Pegasus Bridge, we all went wading in the ocean & I found a human rib which I still have. I am wondering where I should send it perhaps for possible identification via carbon tracing or other means?
I am now 90 y.o. & would like the rib to go to the family of the deceased or to an appropriate museum.

Hi there, you'll want to take the WEST Cable Car for the shortest (and easiest) route to the Plank Road. It's about 100 m in elevation gain, aobut a 30 minute walk. A lot closer than the North Cable Car. Good luck and let me know how you get on ! Sarah

In Luang Prabang I was charged $71.78 for ₭1,500,00 at the Laos development bank atm. Even though the ₭30,00 fee wasn't disclosed, that's awfully close to the bank rate, so I'm not too bothered by the ₭1,500,00 limit since the fees are so low and I can return the next day. On my trip through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos I would say this was a reasonable fee, though in Ho Chi Minh city I did find an ATM that didn't charge any fees and gave me the current bank rate. Sadly, I'm use to paying much higher fees in the US, Europe and pretty much anywhere else in the world I've been.
