Hi Christine, thanks for the message – It looks as though that doesn’t run anymore, I’ve updated the details in the post – Faster Shinkansen trains will get you from Kyoto to Nagoya in 30-45 minutes, and then you can take a JR Chuo line train to Nakatsugawa (about 75 minutes) – Sarah

Thanks for compiling this useful guide. I’m considering taking a day trip from Kyoto and hiking the Magome-Tsumago trail (in and out). I can’t seem to find the ~30-45min Shinkansen line from Kyoto to Nakatsugawa. Do you know if this line is no longer available?

Hi Jack, nothing at all on bear attacks in the Magome/Tsumago area since I think 2020/1. The tourist office is very good at making people aware if there has been anything recent, and they will post notices. Bells are available along the trail, and you can always attach one to your backpack. I also haven’t heard anything about snakes or hornets. Its a deligthful hike I do hope you take it! Sarah

Thanks so much for such a detailed write up. I’m going to ask what a lot of people have asked… I keep seeing that bear attacks are at record numbers in Japan for the past year or so, and it’s really making me anxious about doing this trail solo. Have you heard anything about bear attacks in the area at all in 2023/2024, and also did you hear anything about snakes/hornets? I really don’t want to splash out £200 on a guide, but wondering if its the best thing for my peace of mind! As you can tell I’m quite stressed out by it, but I really want to do it as it looks so amazing!

I want to use The Magome luggage forwarding service to Tsumago. But our ryokan is smack in the middle ou the trail.
Do you know if we can leave our luggage 24hours at tsumago and just pick it up on our way to the train the next day?

Hi Claire – there’s a lovely ryokan at Narai, truly exceptional, called BYAKU NARAI and in Karuizawa, the Tsuruya Ryokan is also rather lovely.
