How to Get to Phu Quoc [Flights, Buses, Ferries]

The red dirt Vietnamese Island of Phu Quoc is just 15 kilometers from the coast of Cambodia, yet it’s 45 kilometers from the Vietnamese coast.  This holiday island is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the food (the seafood here is amazing), the chilled-out life, and the beaches.  Much of the island is part of the National Park, and so is protected and there are some great hikes, snorkels, and dives to enjoy there.  But what’s the best way to get to Phu Quoc Island?  And what are the options for traveling to Phu Quoc?  Here’s our guide on how to get to Phu Quoc Island.

Where is Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island is in the Gulf of Thailand.  This Vietnamese island is 15 kilometers from Cambodia’s coast at the closest point.  It is 45 kilometers from Ha Tien the Vietnamese mainland to Phu Quoc Island.  Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam.

How to get to Phu Quoc – Transport Options

There is a small airport here on Phu Quoc island, which services primarily domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.  There are international flights from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Singapore, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.  Phu Quoc Island is also serviced by ferries from the Vietnamese ports of Ha Tien and Rach Gia.  There is no ferry from Cambodia to Phu Quoc at this time.  To get to Phu Quoc from Vietnam you have the option of flying or taking buses and then ferries, depending on where in Vietnam you are traveling from.

How to get to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City

For transport from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc, you have several options.  You can fly to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City, you can take a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia and then take a ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc, or you can take a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien and then take the ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc.  There are no useful train schedules for traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc.

Flights to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City

The direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc takes about an hour.  Four airlines fly to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City they are:

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc leave from Ho Chi Minh Airport (SGN) and land at Duong Dang Airport (PQC). Flying to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City is the fastest and most comfortable way to go from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc.

The first flight each day from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc is at around 5 am and the last flight to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City is at around 925pm.   There are (depending on the season) about 30 flights a day from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island.  Flying to Phu Quoc island tends to be cheap and is the best way to get to Phu Quoc Island.

Bus and boat Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Min City – via Ha Tien

It’s about 380 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island by road and 270 kilometers by direct flight.  If you want to travel by road and sea from HCMC to Phu Quoc, then you have two options for your ferry port.  The shortest and quickest bus and ferry route to Phu Quoc from HCMC is via Ha Tien.  You’ll be able to choose from either a minivan from HCMC to Ha Tien or a larger bus

It takes about 12 hours to travel via bus and boat from Ho Chi Minh City via Ha Tien to Phu Quoc.  There are both daytime and nighttime buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien.  At this time you cannot book a through route, you need to book a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien and then, separately, a ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc.

The bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien takes about 8 hours and you can check departure times here.

The ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.  There are two ferries a day – one at 730 am and one at 12 30 pm.

Bus and boat Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Min City – via Rach Gia

The bus and ferry route to Phu Quoc from HCMC via Rach Gia takes about 8 hours.  (this doesn’t include check-in times for the ferry, or for waiting for connecting ferries to the bus)

It takes about 8 hours to travel via bus and boat from Ho Chi Minh City via Rach Gia to Phu Quoc.  There are both daytime and nighttime buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia.  At this time you cannot book a through route, you need to book a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia and then, separately, a ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc.

The ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.  There are four ferries a day to Phu Quoc from Rach Gia.

How to get to Phu Quoc from Hanoi

For transport from Hanoi to Phu Quoc, your best option is to fly.

The direct flight from Hanoi to Phu Quoc takes about two hours.  Three airlines fly to Phu Quoc from Hanoi they are:

Flights from Hanoi to Phu Quoc leave from Hanoi Noi Bai Airport (HAN) and land at Duong Dang Airport (PQC).  Flying to Phu Quoc from Hanoi is the fastest and most comfortable way to go from Hanoi to Phu Quoc.

The first flight each day from Hanoi to Phu Quoc is at around 530am and the last flight to Phu Quoc from Hanoi is at around 820pm.   There are (depending on the season) about 27 flights a day from Hanoi to Phu Quoc Island.  Flying to Phu Quoc island from Hanoi tends to be cheap and is the best way to get from Hanoi to Phu Quoc Island.

The best way to travel from Hanoi to Phu Quoc Island is to fly.  Traveling by any other method will just take a long time and is likely to be more expensive.

Arriving at the airport on Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc international airport is located about 10 kilometers from Duong Dong, the main town on Phu Quoc Island.  Many of the hotels and resorts provide a pickup service,  or you can book (and prepay) a private transfer from Phu Quoc Island here.  There are also taxi counters outside the terminal of the Phu Quoc Airport arrivals, the taxi prices will depend on your negotiating skills and where your hotel is located.

How to get to Phu Quoc from Cambodia

If you are traveling onto Cambodia from Phu Quoc, or from Cambodia to Phu Quoc, then your best two options are

  1.  Fly from Phu Quoc to Phnom Penh and you can check schedules here
