Our first foray out of San Jose was to the Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo. That’s Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. It’s definitely Caribbean. It’s very laid back. And it’s a great place to chill out for several days or longer. We hiked to a wildlife sanctuary, we rode bikes along the coast. We headed into Cahuita National Park. But first, we had to get there. The most common route to Puerto Viejo is from San Jose, although some come from Limon. We went to Puerto Viejo from San Jose, and it’s pretty straightforward, although there are a few gotchas. Hello and thank you so much for this useful information. The only flight we can get from Cancun Mexico is on Valaris, which lands us in San Jose Costa Rica at 3:45 PM. We will need to stay in San Jose Costa Rica one night before we take the bus to Puerto Viejo the next day. Please, if you would, recommend a hotel near San Jose airport and also near the bus stop. We will be walking. Thank you.
I would head into the city, and be closer to the bus station rather than staying out at the airport, there’s more places to eat etc, and you don’t have the hassle of getting into the city first thing in the morning. Depends on your budget. We stayed at the Posada Trianon – its a 25 minute walk to the bus station (not difficult and totally felt safe doing it). Pop open the map I’ve included in the article and have a look at options on booking.com.
Hello! Just wanted to provide an update in case you update this page. The 12pm bus to puerto Viejo now only runs on Friday and Saturday, not Sunday.
