Colombia Travel Adapter – Plug + Power Adapter for Colombia

Usually, the first thing that we do when we arrive in a new hotel in a new country is charge our devices.  And so it’s important to make sure that we have the right plug adapter for the country.  So we always check out what the plugs and sockets are in each country. Colombia is no exception.  And if you’re on a trip to South America you’re going to have fun.  The sockets and plugs here vary between the South American countries, so you’ll need a few adapters (or one really great one!).  However, let’s focus on the Colombia travel adapter you need.

As you travel around the world – or even South America you’ll find that the electricity supply differs between countries.  First of all the voltage, which ranges from 100 volts to 240 volts.  And the appliances that are used and produced in different countries can be rated to different voltage levels.  Then there are the sockets and the plugs that fit in them. Coming from the UK we’re used to needing adapters wherever we go! Having the right travel adapter for Colombia is just one of the things that you’ll find on our Colombia travel checklist.

If you’re traveling from Europe, Australia, or New Zealand, then the chances are that you’ll need a plug converter for your travel to Colombia.  The first thing to check is whether your plug will fit (don’t worry, we have photos).  And then you need to understand if the voltage of your devices is compatible with the voltage provided in Colombia.

What’s the Electricity Supply like in Colombia?

In Colombia, the electricity supply is 110 volts. 

This is different from North America, which uses 120 volts.  Colombia’s voltage is also very different from Central Europe, which is 230 volts.  The United Kingdom operates at 230 volts.  Australia operates at 220 -240 volts.  New Zealand operates at 230-240 volts.

Most of our devices these days don’t need voltage converters, as they are Dual Rated, or rated for a voltage range, which means that you can use them – say between 110 volts and 240 volts.

Voltage converters are expensive and heavy and they’re not usually something that you take on holiday. If the voltage of your device is different from what’s used in Colombia, then you usually need to use a converter to safely use it.  The main issue is with hair dryers, curling irons, and hair irons.  However, virtually all devices that we use every day cover a range and will display a notice like “Voltage 100 volts to 240 volts”.

Type A electric plugs tend to be used in Costa Rica, China, North America, Central America, and Japan.

Type B electric plugs are used in Costa Rica, Cuba, the Caribbean, and some Central American countries.

What types of plugs are used in Colombia?

You will find two similar, but different types of plugs in Colombia.  Colombia plugs and sockets are Type A and Type B.  And you will find both socket types in Colombia.  The SK Ross adapter fits both types of sockets.

What types of sockets are used in Colombia?

Colombia has two types of sockets and you will find both type A and Type B sockets in Colombia for electricity.  You’ll need to plan on finding either of these sockets when you’re traveling in Colombia.

Does Colombia use the same plug as the USA?

Yes, if you’re traveling from North America then your plug should work. However, please note that a Type B plug will NOT fit into a Type A socket.  So if you have a Type B plug you’ll need a converter.

Can I use a Type A plug in a Type B socket?

Yes.  You can use a Type A plug in a Type B socket.

Can I use a Type B plug in a Type A socket?

No.  The Type B plug will NOT fit into a Type A socket.

Do you need a voltage converter in Colombia?

Probably NOT. Most people traveling with laptops, phones, and other such devices – like us – simply use a Travel Adapter.  99% of travelers manage with just a plug converter.  Voltage converters tend to be heavy and expensive and most devices that we use every day are fine with a plug converter

What type of plugs are needed in Colombia?

You’ll find two different types of sockets (and plugs) in Colombia.  You will find a mix of plug types A and B in Colombia.

What is the recommended Colombia travel adapter?

Final Words on Travel Adapters for Colombia

You’ll find both Type A and Type B plugs and sockets in Colombia and there’s no telling what socket you’ll find when booking a room or a dorm bed.  North American travelers *should* be ok, as the USA uses both Type A and Type B plugs, but if your device has a Type B plug and you find a Type A socket, then it’s not going to work.  If you’re a traveler from Europe, Australia, or New Zealand then you’re 99% certain to need a Travel Adapter for Colombia.
