However, sockets and plugs in Sweden are pretty easy. And their uniform too, unlike countries like Italy, which have several different sockets and plugs. So the good news is that it’s one type of socket and one type of plug in Sweden.
What’s the Electricity Supply like in Sweden?
In Sweden, the electricity supply is 230 volts and 50Hz.
This differs from the United States where the voltage is 120 volts.
Australia’s electricity supply operates at 220-240 volts
New Zealand has an electrical supply that works at 230-240 volts.
The UK’s electrical supply is 230 volts, as is mainland Europe.

I could just say that the plugs for Sweden as the “two round pin ones” and the sockets for Sweden are the “ones with two round holes”, but there’s an international naming standard for plugs and socks and it is really easy to understand – they’re letters of the alphabet. The plug type for Sweden is “F”. And the socket type for Sweden is the same – type “F”. I’ve included a photo of what they look like later in this article.

What does it mean that the voltage is different in Sweden?
Possible. Voltage in the US is 110-120 volts. In Sweden, it’s 230 volts. That’s a big difference.
What it means is that if you have a device that operates only at 110 or 120 volts, then it’s not going to work either well or at all in Sweden. However, your mobile phone, e-reader, or laptop generally do, as they work on voltage ranges – usually between 110 volts and 240 volts so that they can be used all over the world.
What doesn’t work well are devices like curling irons and hair dryers. The rice cooker that we bought in the US also wouldn’t work well in Sweden or Europe, as it was designed only to be used at 120 volts. I suspect we’d have had a burning smell if we plugged it in over here!

Yes, you will need a power and plug adapter to use your US devices in Sweden. The only type of adapter is one that converts to a Type F (two-prong) adapter, which will fit into sockets in Sweden.
Do you need a voltage converter in Sweden?
Probably not. It depends on what device you need to charge. If you’re taking a rice cooker with you (unlikely, I know, but you may be self-catering, so who knows), then you’ll need a voltage converter, but to be honest, it is probably better just to buy a rice cooker in Sweden and then donate it to a charity store when you’re done.
However for most devices, like your phone or camera, then you can simply use a plug adapter.
