Almaty Airport is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city center, and that’s close enough that on a clear-traffic day you’re in the taxi for barely 25 minutes, and far enough that on a bad one it can go beyond 45 minutes. Whichever direction you’re headed, either to or from the airport, you’ve got four ways to do this route. You can take a private transfer, a taxi, the public bus, or Yandex, and whether you’ve already got Kazakh mobile data sorted. Where is Almaty Compared to the Airport
Almaty Airport (ALA) is around 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the city center, and the drive typically takes between 25 and 45 minutes depending on the traffic and the time of day. Rush hour traffic rather than the distance is the main issue. And catch rush hour on a rainy day, and it might be a good idea to replan your trip! If you’re landing or leaving at night, you won’t see much of the city either way, just streetlights and the dark outline of the mountains in the distance.

How to Go between Almaty and the Airport
There are four ways to cover this route, and which one suits you best changes slightly depending on whether you’re arriving or departing, so I’ve split the two directions out below.
How to Go from Almaty to Almaty Airport
If you’re leaving Almaty and heading out to catch a flight, you’ve got the same private transfer, taxi, bus and Yandex Go options as arriving travelers. However, a departure adds one extra consideration. You’re much more focused on a fixed pickup time rather than when you arrive and are happy to just walk out and grab whatever’s waiting.
Pre-booking a transfer or scheduling your Yandex Go with a buffer built in definitely takes the guesswork out of getting there on time. Public transport works fine if you’re traveling light and your flight isn’t at an awkward hour. How Early Should You Leave for Almaty Airport
As a general rule, aim to be at the airport at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and closer to 3 hours before an international one, then work backward from there to figure out when to leave the city. You NEED to add extra time to get to the airport if you’re traveling during the morning or evening rush, when the driving time can easily double. Yandex will give you estimated travel times.

Booking a Private Transfer from Almaty to Almaty Airport
A private transfer costs more than a taxi, but you’re paying for certainty: a driver waiting outside your hotel at a fixed time, rather than hoping an app finds you a car on a busy morning (we’ve never had a problem with finding a ride through Yandex ever, even at 02:30) However, private transfers suit early flights, big groups, or anyone who would rather not think about logistics on travel day.
Almaty to Almaty Airport by Taxi / Yandex
Yandex Go works so well for this route that I’m not going to even deal with the regular taxi side of things. Open the app, set the airport as your destination, and you’ll get an upfront fare before you commit, usually somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 KZT depending on time of day and demand. Taking a Bus from Almaty to Almaty Airport
Bus No. 92 runs between the city and the airport, picking up right outside the domestic and international terminals. You can see where on the map of the airport here.
It costs 150 KZT paid in cash to the driver, or 80 KZT if you’ve got an Onay transport card loaded up (download the app here). It’s the cheapest option by a long way, but it only runs roughly between 06:00 and 22:00.
There are, however, several other buses that stop just outside the airport barriers (it’s here), (or on Yandex Maps here) on Mailin Street; these are Buses 79, 86 and 106. Open up the Yandex Go app and select transport, and it will tell you the best bus to catch.
If you’re departing in the wee small hours, then Night Bus number 3 goes from the city and stops at Mailin Street.
How to Go from Almaty Airport to Almaty
Arriving at an airport is a little more forgiving than departing from one, since you’re not working against a check-in deadline. In Almaty, the same four options apply: private transfer, taxi, bus and Yandex Go. The main difference is the taxi booth in the airport.
There is free WiFi in the airport, but you need a local SIM to access it. So if you’re relying on using Yandex Go for your transport from the airport to the city, you will need to arrange local data before you get here, or before you leave the airport. Taking a Private Transfer from Almaty Airport to Almaty
A pre-booked private transfer means someone is waiting for you in arrivals with your name on a board, which takes the stress out of a late-night landing in an unfamiliar city. It costs more than hailing a taxi yourself, but for a first arrival, or one that lands after dark, you might feel more comfortable with it.

There’s an official taxi desk in the arrivals hall. It’s called “Eko-Taxi”, and it’s worth using rather than accepting a ride from one of the unofficial drivers who sometimes regularly approach travelers inside the terminal. The desk agrees a fixed price before you get in, generally somewhere in the 4,000 to 6,000 KZT range to the city center, depending on where you’re going. English is hit and miss with individual drivers, but the fixed-price desk system means you don’t really need much of it to get a fair fare. Yandex Go works from the airport too and usually comes in cheaper than the taxi desk, though pickup can be a little less reliable straight off a flight if the app struggles to pinpoint your exact location outside a busy terminal or you don’t exactly know where you are in relation to the roads.

The same bus, No. 92, picks up outside the domestic terminal and international terminals and runs into the city for around 150 KZT cash, or 80 KZT with an Onay card, taking roughly 45 minutes. Tips for Traveling from Almaty to Almaty Airport
A few things worth knowing before you travel either direction.
- Buffer time: book or leave earlier than you think you need, especially for an international departure or a rush-hour crossing.
- Taxi capacity: a standard sedan comfortably fits 3 passengers and their luggage. Ask for a larger vehicle if there are more of you.
- Cash vs card: carry some cash regardless. Bus drivers and some taxi drivers don’t take bank cards.
- Early morning or late night departures: the bus that goes directly to and from the terminal doesn’t run outside roughly 06:00 to 22:00, so book a transfer or Yandex Go if your flight falls outside that window.
- Language: English is inconsistent among individual drivers. Apps and the fixed-price taxi desk both sidestep the need to negotiate in Russian or Kazakh.
- Booking ahead: worth doing for an early flight or a late arrival.

There’s no single right answer here; it comes down to your flight time, your luggage, and how comfortable you are using Yandex, buses, and transit options. If you’re catching an early or an international flight, book a transfer or a Yandex Go in advance and take the guesswork out of the morning. If you’re arriving with time to spare and traveling light, the bus will get you into the city for next to nothing.
